John Greiner is probably the Park Commissioner about whom the least is known. He was born in the province of Alsace, France, the son of a baker, John Greiner, Sr. He emigrated to Buffalo with his parents, and founded a grocery business. He eventually built a prominent wholesale grocery and produce business as a partner in Miller, Greiner and Company. From 1887 to 1889, Mr. Greiner was Chairman of the Civil Service Commission of Buffalo.
