The Detroit Publishing Company was an early publisher of postcards, prints and albums, primarily of locations within the United States. It commissioned photographers to photograph the views which formed its body of work. After a period of commercial success, the company fell on hard times. Motion pictures and radio overtook its products as a favored mode of entertainment, and less expensive printing processes than the quality photolithographic methods it used also challenged the business. It failed 1924, and saw its assets liquidated in 1932. Its massive archive of glass plate negatives and transparencies were preserved, with much of the collection coming into the possession of the Library of Congress. The images on this page were electronically reproduced by the Libary of Congress from the original 8" x 10" glass plate negatives. The full collection is web-accessable, and is searchable by keyword, subject or location.
